On September 23, 2026, OpenAI updated ChatGPT's voice mode so it can carry out more of what you ask, not just answer questions out loud. You tap the voice icon in the ChatGPT app on the web, an iPhone, or an Android phone, and speak normally. No typing required. (OpenAI, via Unite.AI)
This matters for anyone who has felt stuck staring at a blank text box, unsure what words would get a useful answer. Talking removes that barrier. You do not need to know any special phrasing or prompt tricks. You just need a real question.

Notice none of these sound like a "prompt." They sound like something you would ask a helpful neighbor. That is the point.
The one rule to follow
Voice mode can now also work with other connected apps and services to actually do things, not just talk about them. Before it takes any action, ChatGPT shows you an on-screen review with buttons to approve or decline. You cannot approve an action by voice, only by tapping the screen.
What stays the same
Whether you type or talk, the same safety rule applies: never say your Social Security number, bank account number, password, or a verification code out loud to any AI tool.
