How to Translate a Menu or Sign With Your Phone and AI

You are in Rome, Lisbon, or Mexico City, and the menu is a mystery. Take a picture, and AI can translate it and explain what each dish is, including what is in it.

When this helps

Use this for menus, train signs, museum labels, medicine boxes bought abroad, or instructions on a hotel appliance.

Step by step

  1. Take a clear picture of the menu or sign.
  2. Open your AI app, tap the plus sign (+) or the paperclip, and choose Camera or Photos.
  3. Send the picture with the words below.

Copy these words

“Translate this menu into English. For each dish, tell me what it is and what is in it, in plain words. Point out anything with [ingredients you avoid].”

Fill in anything in [brackets] with your own details, then send.

Good follow-up questions

Before you trust the answer

Translations can miss local words or dish names. If you have a serious food allergy, show your server a written note in their language, and ask before you order. Most AI apps need an internet connection, so check your phone plan's international data before you travel.

Frequently asked questions

Does this work without internet?

Most AI apps need an internet connection. Use hotel or restaurant Wi-Fi, or check your phone plan for international data.

Can AI help me speak the language?

Yes. Ask for simple phrases with an easy pronunciation guide, or use the voice feature to hear them.

Can it translate handwriting?

Often, if the writing is clear. Hold the phone steady and use good light.
