Instruction sheets are written for people who already know how the thing works. You can take a picture of the page and ask AI to give you only the first step, wait for you to finish it, and then give you the next one.
When this helps
Use this for a new thermostat, a printer, a TV remote, a pressure cooker, a fitness watch, or a form you have to fill in. It works best when the instructions are printed in front of you and you can see the device.
Step by step
- Lay the instructions flat in good light and take a clear picture. One picture per page.
- Open your AI app. Tap the plus sign or the paperclip next to the message box and choose Camera or Photos.
- Send the picture with the words below.
- Do the first step. Then type "done," or tell the AI what you see on the device. It will give you the next step.
Copy these words
“Here is a photo of the instructions. Give me only the first step. Wait until I say done before giving me the next one. If I tell you something looks different, help me work out why.”
Good follow-up questions
- "Explain this step in simpler language."
- "The light on my device is blinking. What does that mean?"
- "What happens if I skip this step?"
- "What are you unsure about in these instructions?"
Before you trust the answer
AI can mix up similar models. Check that the model number on your device matches the instructions in the photo. Stop and call the maker or a professional if a step involves gas, a ladder, house wiring, or anything that feels unsafe.
Before you share it
Frequently asked questions
Why ask for one step at a time?
A list of ten steps is hard to follow on a small screen. One step lets you tell the AI when something on your device looks different from what it described.
What if the instructions are in small print?
Move closer, hold the phone steady, and take the picture in good light. If a word is still hard to read, ask the AI to tell you which words it cannot make out.
Can AI help with medicine instructions?
Use it to understand the wording, but check any dose or timing with your pharmacist. Do not rely on AI alone for medicine.
