What Does This Medicare Letter Mean? Ask AI to Explain It

A letter from Medicare arrives. It has codes, dates, and dollar amounts, and you cannot tell whether it is a bill, a warning, or nothing at all. AI can read the letter with you and explain it in plain English in under a minute.

When this helps

Use this for any letter from Medicare, a Medicare Advantage plan, a Part D drug plan, or Social Security. The most common one is the Medicare Summary Notice, which lists the services Medicare was billed for. It says "This is not a bill" near the top, but many people miss that line.

Step by step

  1. Cover your Medicare number and any account numbers with a sticky note or your finger.
  2. Lay the letter flat in good light and take a clear picture. One picture per page.
  3. Open ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. Tap the plus sign (+) or the paperclip next to the message box, then choose Camera or Photos.
  4. Paste or type the words below and tap send.

Copy these words

“Explain what this letter means in plain English. Tell me whether it requires me to do anything, and if so, what and by what date.”

Good follow-up questions

Before you trust the answer

AI can misread a small number or a date. Check any deadline or dollar amount against the letter itself. If the letter asks you to pay or act and you are unsure, call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) or the number on your own plan card. Do not call a number printed in a letter you suspect is fake.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to take a picture of my Medicare letter for AI?

It is safe if you cover your Medicare number, Social Security number, and account numbers first. AI does not need them to explain what the letter says.

Which AI app should I use?

ChatGPT, Claude, and Google Gemini all read photos of letters, and each has a free version. Use the one you already have on your phone.

What if the AI says I owe money?

Check the amount on the letter yourself, then call the number on your own Medicare card or plan card to confirm before you pay anything.
