What Is an Explanation of Benefits? Let AI Read Yours

An Explanation of Benefits, often called an EOB, is a statement from your insurance company after you get care. It shows what the provider charged, what insurance paid, and what you might owe. It is not a bill, but it is hard to read. AI can walk you through it.

When this helps

Use this when an EOB arrives from a Medicare Advantage plan, a Part D drug plan, or other health insurance. It is most useful when a bill from the doctor or hospital arrives later and you want to check that the two match. People with Original Medicare get a Medicare Summary Notice instead, which works the same way.

Step by step

  1. Cover your member ID and claim numbers.
  2. Take a picture of the EOB.
  3. Send it to your AI app with the words below.
  4. Keep the AI's explanation. Compare it to the bill when the bill arrives.

Copy these words

“This is an Explanation of Benefits from my insurance. Explain it in plain English. Tell me what the provider charged, what insurance paid, what I might owe, and whether any claim was denied.”

Good follow-up questions

Before you trust the answer

AI explains what the page says, but your insurance company has the final word. If a claim was denied or a number looks wrong, call the member services number on the back of your insurance card. Denials can often be appealed, and there are deadlines, so call soon.

Frequently asked questions

Is an Explanation of Benefits a bill?

No. It is a summary from your insurance company. If you owe money, the bill will come separately from the doctor or hospital.

What does "patient responsibility" mean?

It is the amount the insurance company says you may owe the provider, such as a copay, coinsurance, or deductible.

What if my EOB shows care I never received?

Call your insurance company. Care you never received can be a billing error or a sign of medical identity theft.
