How to Get a Long Document Summarized With AI

A plan handbook, community rules, a warranty, or a policy booklet runs 20 pages. You need to know three things in it. AI can read the long document and give you the short version.

When this helps

Use this for a homeowners association rule book, a new apartment's resident handbook, a product warranty, a club's bylaws, or an insurance plan booklet.

Step by step

  1. If the document is a PDF or web page, copy the text. If it is on paper, take pictures of the pages.
  2. Remove or cover account numbers and personal details.
  3. Send it to your AI app with the words below.
  4. Ask about the parts that matter to you.

Copy these words

“Summarize this document in plain English in 10 short points. Then list anything I need to do, any deadlines, and any fees or penalties.”

Good follow-up questions

Before you trust the answer

A summary leaves things out. For anything you are about to sign or pay for, ask the AI to quote the exact sentence, then find it in the original. For legal agreements, a lawyer or the organization that wrote the document has the final word.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI read a PDF?

Yes. In ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, tap the plus sign (+) or the paperclip and choose the file.

How long a document can AI handle?

Most AI apps handle dozens of pages. For very long documents, send one section at a time.

Can I trust the summary?

Use it as a guide to what to read closely. Ask the AI to quote the original sentence for anything important, and check it yourself.
