Don't Type It. Let AI Listen to Your Voice Memo.

Don't Type It. Let AI Listen to Your Voice Memo.

Some things are easier to say than to type: the errands for the week, what the plumber told you, or everything you need before a trip. Record yourself talking it through on your phone, upload the recording to ChatGPT, and ask for a checklist. OpenAI added audio uploads to ChatGPT on October 6, 2026.

When this helps

Use this when you have a lot to remember and no patience for typing: a week of errands and appointments, steps someone explained to you, a packing list, or questions for an upcoming visit. Keep it to one or two minutes and one topic.

Step by step

  1. Open the voice recorder on your phone. On an iPhone it is the Voice Memos app. On Android, use the Recorder or Voice Recorder app.
  2. Tap record and talk the way you would to a friend: "This week I need to..." Keep it short. Tap stop when you finish.
  3. Share the recording to ChatGPT. On an iPhone, tap the recording, tap the three dots, tap Share, and choose ChatGPT. If ChatGPT is not in the list, choose Save to Files, then open ChatGPT, tap the plus sign next to the message box, and pick the file.
  4. Type or paste the words below and tap send.
  5. Read the checklist against what you remember saying. Fix anything that is wrong before you rely on it.

Copy these words

“Give me the important points and turn them into a simple checklist.”

What the result looks like

Sample recording (what you might say)

"Okay, things for this week. Pharmacy closes at six on Thursday, so I have to pick up my refill before then. Call Dr. Patel's office to move my appointment from the 14th to the next week. Buy a birthday card for Ellen, her birthday is Saturday. And the car is due for an oil change, maybe Friday morning."

Sample checklist

  • Pick up refill at the pharmacy before 6 p.m. Thursday
  • Call Dr. Patel's office to move the appointment from the 14th to the following week
  • Buy a birthday card for Ellen (birthday is Saturday)
  • Book an oil change, Friday morning if possible

This is a sample to show the shape of the answer. Your checklist will use your own words and may be laid out differently.

Good follow-up questions

Before you trust the answer

A transcript is not a word-for-word record. AI can mishear names, numbers, dates, and medicine names, and OpenAI says its audio transcripts may contain errors. "The 14th" can become "the 40th," and "Patel" can become "Patil." Check every name, date, time, and dollar amount against what you meant. Do not use a transcript as proof of what someone said, and check anything about medicine with your pharmacist.

Before you share it

Frequently asked questions

Can I upload a voice memo to the free version of ChatGPT?

Not as of October 8, 2026. OpenAI's October 6 release notes say audio uploads are for paid ChatGPT plans. On a free account, use the free Gemini app, which accepts audio files (about 10 minutes in total on the free plan, at last report), or open ChatGPT Voice and speak to it directly.

How long can my recording be?

Keep it to one or two minutes for a checklist. OpenAI accepts large files, but short recordings about one topic give cleaner, more accurate lists.

Is this the same as talking to ChatGPT Voice?

No. ChatGPT Voice is a live conversation. This method lets you record whenever it suits you, even without an internet connection, and upload the recording later.
